Arvid Knöppel
Hjortdjur (Deer)
Arvid Knöppel (Swedish, 1892-1970) was a sculptor, drawer, graphic artist and author. Growing up, he spent a lot of time rambling in the countryside with his father, which perhaps explains why he became one of Sweden’s most prominent wildlife artists, alongside Bruno Liljefors. Knöppel is best known for his animal drawings and received much praise for his ability to capture the individual features and movements of animals. For Knöppel, sketching was not just a study for the finished work. It was while drawing – during the intense observation – that the artist felt that the artwork was conceived. This may be a reason why Knöppel’s graphic works are characterised by liveliness to a higher degree than his sculptures. In contrast to his drawings, Arvid Knöppel’s sculptures were strict and inspired by ancient Egyptian art.
