Karin Blomgren: Alltjämt [still]

Opening Saturday, 5 December, 12–4pm. Free admission!
Welcome and a short introduction to the exhibition with director Helena Holmberg and the artist at 1pm.

On display in the upper exhibition room on the first floor.

In the exhibition Alltjämt [still], Karin Blomgren presents a spatial installation specifically adapted for Marabouparken’s upper gallery. The work takes as its starting point the city’s relentless and repetitive movement—a reality that never stands still.

Alltjämt is both a sound installation and a work deeply rooted in—and concerned with—materiality. Wooden balls roll along a track composed of various materials, such as wood, bisque-fired clay, or metal. As the moving spheres encounter these different surfaces, they produce sounds that shift depending on their location along the track. The sounds generated by the different balls blend into ever-changing combinations, intermingling with ambient noise from the surrounding park or the interior of the art gallery. The work as a whole functions as a mechanical orbit—one that, much like the world around us, never comes to a halt.

Karin Blomgren was born in 1987 in Sundbyberg and educated at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway. She creates site-specific works with a focus on physicality, materiality, and space, and has explored unfired clay as a primary medium. Themes of weight, gravity, and movement recur throughout her practice. In her installations, the inherent natural properties and colors of materials—such as untreated wood—interact with other forms of materiality: raw or processed elements, sometimes featuring bold colors reminiscent of urban environments or hardware stores. She lives in Sundbyberg and is a senior lecturer at Konstfack. Alltjämt is her first solo exhibition in Sweden

Past exhibitions include, for example, Hjulespor [wheel tracks] at Vestfold Kunstsenter, Tønsberg (2024); På något sätt tynger det en [In some way it weighs on one] at the Association of Norwegian Sculptors (Norsk Billedhoggerforening), Oslo (2022); Summen av alle krefter [The sum of all forces] at Entrée, Bergen (2021); and Extractions at Kunsthall Stavanger (2018) — all in Norway — as well as several group exhibitions. In 2020, Karin Blomgren was awarded a residency grant by the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

The exhibition is an initiative developed as part of Marabouparken Konsthall’s contribution to the City of Sundbyberg’s centenary celebrations in 2027. Through an Open Call for professional artists based in Sundbyberg, we are taking the opportunity to highlight the local community. Karin Blomgren is this year’s Open Call artist.
