In conjunction with the exhibition Silence Answers All, Marabouparken konsthall invites you to a conversation between Asier Mendizabal and Runo Lagomarsino.
An unverified but recurringly told anecdote describes a Gestapo officer in Picasso’s Paris studio asking, as he points at a reproduction of the Guernica, “Did you do that?” To which Picasso, drily replies “no. You did”. Taken to be a small triumph of dignity, the anecdote also admits to a disheartening defeat. What is the effect of a painting, even if it is the most famous painting of its century, compared to a bomb raid?
Using the exhibition as a starting point and focusing on the painting Guernica and its function as a political icon, the conversation will address the potentials and limits of images as agents of transformation. Historical memory, images that haunts us, the use of historical narratives and retellings will all be addressed in the hope that they could offer tools with which to position ourselves in the present.
Basque artist Asier Mendizabal, whose work has often inquired on the political usages of abstraction and the ideologies of modernism, will contribute his experience growing up in the Basque Country, where Guernica was a ubiquitous image in the form of reproductions and adapted versions for various struggles.
Asier Mendizabal is an artist and Professor of Sculpture at Kungl. Konsthögskolan, Stockholm.
The talk will be held in English
